Circuit-Teleruptor

Teleruptor is a device for controlling the switching on and off of a light point from several different locations, from push buttons. Teleruptor is particularly suitable when you want to install more than three control points for lighting. There are unipolar and bipolar Teleruptor.

Their difference is subtle but important: the first only cut the phase when the lights are turned off, while the second cut both the phase and the neutral. Some models allow you to manage the desired lighting time with a timer. More complex than a simple back and forth,

a Teleruptor usually costs three or four times more expensive because its internal mechanism is more complex. The remote control switch operates as part of a lighting circuit. It allows one or more light point to be activated from one or more commands. As a reminder, an electricity control is a device allowing current to flow.

It is a switch and more particularly a push button for a remote control switch. Typically, the toggle switch is used in cases where there are three or more light controls. In the case of a single order, a simple electrical assembly is sufficient. In the case of two orders, back and forth mounting is recommended.

It is therefore from three commands that the impulse switch is generally used. Principle and operation of the remote control switch in an electrical installation: Composition of a remote control switch: The remote control switch is an electrical equipment which is made up of two main elements which are: The coil.

An electrical contact for the power part.  These two elements are also represented on the electrical symbol of the toggle switch In fact, it also has other elements to operate a remote control switch. But they are not used to facilitate understanding of the operation of the impulse switch from the electrical point of view.

A control part and a power part: The two elements that I indicated to you above are dissociated and each occupy a particular role in the impulse relay. The coil is an element of the control part. The power contact is an element of the power section.

What is an electric impulse switch?

Role and Definition of the remote control switch: The remote control switch operates as part of a lighting circuit. It allows one (or more) light point to be activated from one or more commands.

Principle and operation of the remote control switch in an electrical installation: Composition of a remote control switch: The remote control switch is an electrical equipment which is made up of two main elements which are:

The coil.

An electrical contact for the power part. In fact, it also has other elements to operate a remote control switch.

I suggest you read this article which explains the difference between these two concepts if you do not know it. These two separate elements form what is called a relay in electricity.

The remote control switch coil: In the control part, there is therefore the coil. In more scientific terms, this is also called a solenoid. This coil is an element of the impulse switch which is characterized by a particular physical operation.

When a coil (as a rule) is traversed by a current, it produces a magnetic field. In the case of the remote control switch, the coil “transforms” into a magnet. Thanks to this magnet function, the coil mechanically attracts the power contact which closes. This is what allows the current to pass to the level of the light point. This is why we use the term electric relay: The coil serves as a “relay” to close the power contact.

The interest of  Teleruptor?

The possibility of controlling the coil from a theoretically infinite number of commands. The electrical separation of the control and power parts for a question of electrical safety. It is the remote switch coil which, by virtue of its operation, allows a different assembly from what is done with a simple ignition or a back and forth by allowing the addition of additional electrical controls.

Operation of the remote control switch: Now that things are a little clearer, and that all the elements that make up a remote control switch are in your possession, here is the operating principle of the remote control switch which is broken down into four phases At rest, with no current in the coil, the power contact remains open.

The connected light point does not light up. When a current is injected through the coil pressing the push button, it is magnetized and “closes” the contact to allow current to flow through the power part. The contact remains closed, this is the ignition phase.

Without any new signal the coil is not powered, the power contact remains closed. When a new current is injected into the coil, the power contact is released and no more current flows into the power part. This is the extinction phase.

Wiring and electrical diagram of the remote control switch:

A remote control switch alone cannot operate. It needs to be included in a set, with controls and receivers. The whole forms an electrical diagram. Here is what you need to know about the electrical diagrams for the impulse switch and the different ways of carrying out the electrical wiring: Electrical symbol of the remote control switch:

Why do I suggest the remote control switch symbol in the wiring section? Quite simply because this symbol is sometimes given on electrical plans and diagrams, it is good to know it. Furthermore, this electrical symbol is representative of the operation of the remote control switch, with the control part and the power part.

This electrical symbol is usually accompanied by the acronym TL, which corresponds to the abbreviation of remote control switch.A control part and a power part: With this symbol, I will be able to go back to the control part and the power part. I insist because it is very important to know in order to successfully wire the remote switch.

Control part, push button and coil: As I explained previously, the control part consists of the remote control switch coil. To activate this coil, it needs to be temporarily injected with electric current, so that it “transforms” into a magnet. To do this, we must create an electrical circuit similar to a simple ignition, with instead of the light point, the coil.

But there is another change to be made in this circuit, that of the switch. For simple ignition, the switch is a two-way switch with maintained contact. Current flows continuously through the switch. For the remote control switch coil, the current must only flow temporarily: this is why a push button is used for the remote control switch assembly.

The current flows through the push button (and therefore into the coil) only at the moment of pressing. When the push button is released, the current no longer passes through the coil and the power contact remains closed. I explained it above in the global operation of the impulse switch.

Electrical diagrams of the remote control switch:

The remote switch can be wired in different ways. Even if I have already mentioned it in an article on the two remote switch assemblies, I will use these electrical diagrams since they are important for wiring the remote switch.

These diagrams (which are part of the electrical diagram guide that I am proposing here) will also make it possible to highlight the two control and power circuits implemented when the remote control switch is connected. Here is the electrical diagram of the remote control switch connected with 4 wires in total:

Phase, Neutral, Back button, Return lamp. At the level of the control part: The phase starts from the power supply directly from the protection circuit breaker or from a junction box to a push button terminal. The other push button terminal is connected to one of the remote control switch coil terminals terminal denoted A1 generally for a remote control switch in an electrical panel.

The other electrical terminal of the remote control switch coil noted A2 is connected to the neutral of the power supply.

In terms of the power part: The phase starts from the power supply to enter one of the terminals of the power part of the remote control switch sometimes denoted 1 on for a remote control switch in an electrical panel. The other terminal of the power part (denoted 2) is connected to the light point.

The second terminal of the light point is connected to the neutral of the power supply. Note concerning the wiring of the pushbutton for remote control switch: When it comes to the electrical connection of the push button, care must be taken to choose the normally open contact for the push button connections.

This contact is normally indicated by a diagram on the back of the push button. Electrical diagram, remote switch assembly with 3 electric wires: This assembly is different from the previous one in that the phase is not sent to the push button. It is the neutral which is cut as can be seen in the following electrical diagram.

We also call a “push-button neutral” assembly. Translation types, Text translation, Source text, 1631 / 5000, Translation results

Difference between a remote control switch and a back and forth?

I mentioned it at the very beginning of the article. For electrical assemblies requiring only two commands, a two-way connection is sufficient. Two so-called two-way switches are used. As soon as more than two commands are needed, it is necessary to switch to an electrical assembly with remote control switch.

This is the case in stairwells (rather a timer anyway) or living halls. Can we use a two-way switch with a remote control switch?

This is a question that seems legitimate. Why do we have to use a push button for the remote switches? The answer to this question has to do with the operation of the remote control switch coil. This coil, if it is permanently energized, will generate opposing magnetic fields. Basically, the coil will attract the power contact and then push it back.

The impulse switch will therefore not be able to operate if it is controlled by a two-way switch.

Exceptions that confirm the rule: Sometimes in electricity, it’s like grammar or spelling, there are exceptions. For the remote control switch, there are actually possibilities to operate with a two-way switch. But these are very specific cases, specific to certain remote control switches.

For example, the Yokis brand radio model, reference MTR2000ER, can be controlled with an E2BP radio transmitter. The latter can be connected with a push button or a two-way switch, as desired.
